"New Age Nouveau" One Man Show September 2, 2011 5-8pm To Honor the Father, Alfonse Mucha
Mary's Comment:
"Fitz is like a tornado, passionate about his art, and forever in motion. He first gained notoriety by painting ceilings and walls with the most intricate of designs (see Artists - Murals) for Hollywood stars. Coming back to Charleston to be near family, he never misses a beat painting with more than enough work. His fine art show features women (as well as Apollo and the Muses) in the art deco style. Simply amazing. Drop by and take a look at these visions of loveliness. Fitz can be commissioned to paint portraits realistically or in the art deco style."

New Age Nouveau!
In the words of Jeffrey Louis Fitzharris, “women are a gift”. Fitzharris, whose work has been compared to Alfonse Mucha and Gustave Klimpt, paints the idealic and transcendent beauty of women. Fitzharris’s "beauties" will be on exhibit at his first show in Charleston, “New Age Nouveau”, at the Mary Martin Gallery from September 2 through September 30th. The public is invited to the opening reception on September 2nd, from 5 pm to 9 pm. Fitzharris, whose artistic journey began with his first painting at the age of 4, was introduced, and became fascinated with, “the magic of Alfonse Mucha” and Art Nouveau at the age of seven when a local librarian guided him to the art section.Art Nouveau, being more than an artistic style but a way of thinking about modern society and a philosophy of design as part of ordinary daily life, continues to strongly influence Fitzharris and his art. For the past 15 years Fitzharris has produced custom artwork with the aim to incorporate art into the daily lives and homes of clients and patrons through decorative works, namely murals. While residing in California, along with decorative art, Fitzharris also became known for his portraits. Many consider his unique “New Age Nouveau” painting style to be especially intriguing for portraiture. Among his list of clients are Sylvester Stallone, Joanna and Sidney Poitier, Sumner Redstone, and Paul Reiser. Fitzharris explains his “New Age Nouveau” signature style as “honoring” the masters of Art Nouveau in the rendering of his artwork, just as those artists painting with an impressionistic style “honor” the masters of Impressionism. Mary Martin of Mary Martin Gallery also has a great appreciation for Art Nouveau; and states, “If the minds of Alfonse Mucha, Sandro Botticelli and Gustave Klimpt could collaborate and create today, the results would be the works of Jeffrey Louis Fitzharris” Fitzharris is represented in Charleston by the Mary Martin Gallery, 39 Broad Street, Charleston, SC 29401. ARTIST STATEMENT "I first began painting when I was four, using paints and canvases I got for Christmas. I started with a koala bear and moved on to nature. I found my initial inspirations in my local library and the woods surrounding our house. Album cover artwork from the ‘70s fascinated me, as did all the art books the librarian showed me. It was there that I first discovered Alphonse Mucha and Gustave Klimt, my biggest and longest lasting inspirations.
Eventually, my muse changed from leaves and pictures in a book to a real girl—Jessica. I saw her immediately as a Mucha goddess. My work today owes its evolution to those early works. My love of stylized, colorful flowers and shapes comes from my uncle giving me albums from his collection: Moody Blues, Jefferson Airplane, The Doors, and particularly, The Beatles’ Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. I continue to be fascinated by the psychedelic acid culture of the ‘60s, and that influence presents itself in all of my work.
Combining my love of art, especially Mucha, and other Art Nouveau greats, and music led me to explore what I think of as “The Mucha Effect.” My work combines the fluidity and femininity of traditional Art Nouveau with elements of Mucha and the psychedelic album art of the ‘60s. The women in my paintings are modern day goddesses, full of strength and vulnerability, reminiscent of the Art Nouveau, but wholly in the 21st Century."
