Allegory in Alice: A Novel Approach
Beyond the looking glass lies a land of mysterious light and surprising reflections. Take a contemporary journey of curiosity and wonder as you explore the beloved fairy tale classic “Alice in Wonderland” as seen through the eyes of Master Artist Arleta Pech. In this realistically painted realm, let your senses chase the long overdue rabbit down his hole as you explore the childhood images “hidden” among the still life representation of the grown up world. Join Arleta, on October 2nd from 5-7:30 p.m. at the Mary Martin Gallery, located in Charleston’s Historic French Quarter at 39 Broad Street on Gallery Row, as she shares her visions of “Alice” reflecting on life in the modern world.

Exception: CHARLESTON 2009 workshop ONLY you will need one- 11 x 14and two- 9x12 Ampersand Boardshttp://www.dickblick.com/zz149/11c/ (Ampersand has the right tooth, cheaper brands do NOT and are slicker so make sure its Ampersand brand-not an off brand) OR if you prefer to gesso your own un-tempered hardboard, make sure you use a smooth sponge roller from a hardware store and keep rolling the gesso until you see it flatten and all the bubbles pop. Let Dry, then lightly sand and apply 3 more layers following the previous instructions. It should feel like the surface of an egg. Brushes for class:
Blending brushesTHESE ARE KEY TO MY TECHNIQUE
I recommend Fritch Scrubbers as they do not break hairs when blending paint for my technique, they come in a 3 brush set for $12.95, and if you wish also order an extra #16 size for bigger petals.http://www.cheapjoes.com/art-supplies/15067_fritch-scrubbers.asp OTHER brushes for applying paint:
I like to use synthetic fliberts that come to a point or moon shape, any brand will do, they do not break or
shed hairs. You should plan to bring a small #2, #4, #8 A very reasonable brush
ALSO - a couple of old soft flat sables are great for (soft blending) pick a small one and a larger one that isnot full of old paint, or losing hairs!!
I recommend traveling with a swing arm lamp with 60 watt bulb, to help speed dry your oil paintings in your room.
Oil Paints: ARLETA will supply the oil paint needed for each student, drying medium and special transfer paper for a $10.00 fee.
