BIOGRAPHY:

Some of R J Carnahan's earliest memories are of countless hours spent drawing. Throughout his school years, his primary subjects were portraits, automobiles, and animals. Also serious about music, by high school graduation he was playing trumpet on weekends in a small club band. Later he played guitar and trumpet in bands in Illinois and California. He also worked as a truck driver, a fireman on the railroad, served in the army, and loaded barges on the Illinois River. Art was something he initially did for himself in his spare time. In the late 70s, married and living in Santa Barbara, California, he finally transitioned to a full-time artist.

After living in Santa Barbara, California for many years, R J Carnahan now lives in Chicago.

COLLECTIONS:
R J Carnahan's works are in many corporate and private collections around the world. Corporate collections include the Great Republic Insurance Co., the Hollister Corporation, the Asian-Pacific Society of Cardiology, Travelers Insurance Co., the American Pediatric Society, the American Dental Association, Kinko's; private collections include the Firestone family, Pierce Brosnan, John Cleese, Carlos Santana, Anthony Perkins, Timothy Bottoms, Richard Lewis (movie and TV producer), Narada Michael Walden (music producer), and many others.

ARTIST'S STATEMENT:
For several years I was an abstract painter. Although I have been a realist for a long time, I still approach my work from a non-objective viewpoint. Of course the subject plays an important part in any realist painting, but my foremost concerns are shapes and colors, design, and composition. The scene will usually be altered greatly to fit these criteria.

My style of painting shifts from almost photo-realistic to impressionistic depending on the subject. Paintings of rocks, one of my favorite subjects, will often contain wild brushstrokes and splashes of color. I like to paint many little abstract pieces within the whole. I always look at small sections of my paintings with a magnifying glass, and will often rework pieces several times after the initial "finish". For me, painting is mostly about the process.
