I have always loved doing things with my hands and sculpture was the next natural extension of that love. There is an indescribable feeling when my hands are molding what my mind is visualizing. Weather sculpting from a live model or a wall of photos no completed piece ever looks like the reference. It’s all imagination. The turn of a head, the twist of a foot or hand, a funny moment, the connection between two, the independence of one, moments in time. Hoping people will see what I see or feel what I feel, that is my goal.
While I am sculpting I am continually changing the light source on my work, not the model. I work in a medium that is both forgiving and demanding. Forgiving in its ability to allow me to run planes together differently than nature created which in turn allows me to emphasize an emotion or movement. Demanding in the work necessary to finish it so that it is compelling and requiring a touch. Viewers of my work are constantly asking if it is all right to “touch”.
“Absolutely”, I say. They smile, they touch, they see.
I have succeeded.
Bob Kelly
Robert Kelly is one of the most exciting sculptors to arrive on the art scene in the last few years. Capturing the elusive essense of femininity in contemplative moods is his hallmark. He produces his work in bronze mounted on granite bases as well as marble/resin in white on granite or acrylic bases. Available in larger sizes.
Kelly is also known for his polar bears on ice. Playful poses attract adults and children alike. Robert has one series of polar bears that are part of a collectors' series all with the ability to be placed together or separately.
2011 was a very exciting year in my artistic journey – continuing to build a body of work in my figurative series, pursing my love of and connection with animals with additional work in my wildlife series and exploring new mediums, new patinas and larger scale (life-size or larger) work.
Here are some of the highlights for 2011:
Created ___ new figurative limited edition works -
There’s something about those polar bears that continues to draw in my patrons so I added one large bear – “ ” and two new small bears – “ “ and “ “ that are part of The Polar Bear Club On Ice collectible series.
Doubled the size and range of my representation in the U.S. I am now represented “from sea to shining sea” in eight cities across the country - Charleston SC, Palm Beach Gardens FL, Roswell GA, Boerne TX, Santa Fe NM, Park City UT, Scottsdale AZ and Palm Desert CA.
All of my work is now available in bronze or cast marble, with a choice of two patinas in bronze. Sculptures are mounted on either highly polished black granite or custom-designed sculpted “ice” or “water” bases. Launched initial plans for large-scale versions of my work – life-size or larger.
Juried into the prestigious annual Sculpture in the Park show in Loveland CO for the third time.
Invited to be highlighted in The Best of Artists, Art Buzz and Artsy publications and websites.
