 Artist Statement

The style with which I have created each creature in my “Stewards of the Sea” art series reflects how I feel about each subject. Sea creatures bring me such joy. I see them as mysterious and beautiful, so when I draw them I want my audience to experience the same emotions as I do. Though I draw these subjects in a technique that is not realistic to the eye, I find them realistic in spirit. I try to capture the unique complexity of each sea creature through pin and ink by using vibrant color and bizarre shapes & designs.

I find it incredible how God has made such a variety of contrasting sea life. He has made each animal so perfect in its own way, which excites me to no end. He has so gifted us through these creations, and the way that I express my gratitude is by drawing them.

Creating art is a source of contentment and peace for me and my hope is that my art will also bring joy to other people. Having lived near the ocean all my life, I want to bring awareness to the beauty of the sea and the life forms that live there & need protection. This goal has been inspired by my local aquarium. Since the SC Aquarium opened in May 2000, my family and I have been charter members and frequent visitors. I have noticed how much care they take of each animal. They have always protected each creature they house and nurse the sick back to health, while also raising awareness of the animals and displaying their pure beauty. Another inspiration of mine is the artist Jonathan Green. He uses unique color, shape, and design in each piece to convey a complex freedom. His works also communicate the stories of “doing life together” and finding fun and joy in daily living.
